Parkinson's Law, applied: a tight deadline for every task

Work expands to fill the time available. Goaltree’s coach turns that against procrastination: tap the Parkinson’s Law playbook on a goal and it proposes a short, realistic deadline for every open task, earliest milestone first. You approve them in one tap.

01 / What it is

Parkinson’s Law says that work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion. The historian C. Northcote Parkinson wrote it as a joke about bureaucracy in The Economist in 1955, but anyone who has finished a week-long task on the last afternoon knows it’s true.

The practical fix is an artificial deadline: give each task less time than feels comfortable, but not so little that it can’t be done well.

When to use it

  • Tasks without due dates drift from week to week
  • You finish everything at the last minute anyway
  • A goal has several phases and the early ones never seem to end

How to do it

  1. 01 Estimate honestly How long would the task take if you worked on it without stalling?
  2. 02 Cut the time Set a due date close to that estimate, not the comfortable one.
  3. 03 Order by phase Earlier milestones come due first, so later work has something to build on.
  4. 04 Reset, don’t drop If a deadline was too tight, move it once and learn from it. Don’t give up on deadlines altogether.
02 / Other apps explain it. Goaltree applies it.

How Goaltree applies it

When you apply the playbook, the coach reads the goal’s open tasks and their milestones, sizes each task and proposes a due date for it. Nothing changes until you approve the list.

What your coach does

  • Gives quick tasks 1–2 days, medium tasks 3–5 and hard ones up to 7
  • Pushes each later milestone’s tasks further out, so phases come due in order
  • Shows every proposed date in a list you approve in one tap, not a wall of text

In the app: Explore → Playbooks → pick a goal.

FAQ

Questions, answered

What is Parkinson's Law in simple terms?

Work takes as long as the time you give it. Give a task a week and it takes a week; give it two days and it often takes two. Tighter deadlines are the practical response.

Won’t tight deadlines just stress me out?

The deadlines are sized to the task: a day or two for quick ones, up to a week for hard ones. They’re meant to be tight but doable, and you see every date before it’s set.

Does it work with milestones?

Yes. The coach looks at which milestone each task belongs to and schedules earlier phases before later ones, so you’re not finishing the launch before the build.

Can I change a deadline later?

Yes. They’re ordinary due dates on your tasks, so you can edit any of them or ask your coach to move one.
