Habit stacking: anchor your goal to routines you already have

“After I pour my coffee, I’ll write for ten minutes.” Habit stacking ties a new action to one you already do, so it happens without a reminder. Goaltree’s coach picks the anchors for you: apply the playbook to a goal and get 2–3 concrete stacks built from that goal’s real work.

01 / What it is

Habit stacking was popularized by James Clear in Atomic Habits, building on BJ Fogg’s Tiny Habits research. You link a new behavior to an existing one with a simple formula: after [current habit], I will [new habit].

The existing habit becomes the trigger, so you don’t have to rely on motivation or memory.

When to use it

  • You keep forgetting something you’ve decided to do
  • A goal needs small, regular effort rather than one big push
  • Your days already have a reliable routine to build on

How to do it

  1. 01 List your anchors Write down what you already do every day: coffee, brushing your teeth, the commute, lunch.
  2. 02 Pick a small action Choose something from your goal that takes a few minutes.
  3. 03 Write the stack After [anchor], I will [action]. Be specific about when and where.
  4. 04 Start tiny Keep it small enough that you never skip it, then let it grow.
02 / Other apps explain it. Goaltree applies it.

How Goaltree applies it

The coach reads what the goal involves and suggests 2–3 specific stacks, each pairing a routine you most likely already have with a task or practice from that goal. Each one is concrete enough to start tomorrow.

What your coach does

  • Reads the goal’s tasks to understand what the work involves
  • Suggests 2–3 stacks anchored to routines like morning coffee or the commute
  • Keeps each stack specific and small enough to start right away

In the app: Explore → Playbooks → pick a goal.

FAQ

Questions, answered

What is an example of habit stacking?

“After I pour my morning coffee, I’ll draft one launch post.” “After lunch, I’ll answer beta tester messages.” The first part is something you already do; the second is the new action.

Can I track a stack as a habit?

Yes. Ask your coach to add it as a habit, or add it yourself in the habit tracker, where it gets a streak, levels and a one-tap daily check-in.

How is this different from the habit tracker?

The habit tracker keeps your streaks going. The habit stacking playbook works out what to stack and where, based on the goal you’re working on.
