Playbooks / 2-Minute Rule
The 2-Minute Rule, applied to your actual task list
If it takes less than two minutes, do it now. The hard part is spotting those tasks in a long list. Goaltree’s coach does it for you: apply the 2-Minute Rule to a goal and it lists every open task you could finish in under two minutes, so you can clear them before lunch.

The 2-Minute Rule comes from David Allen’s Getting Things Done: if an action takes less than two minutes, do it as soon as it comes up, because tracking it would take longer than doing it.
James Clear later used the same name in Atomic Habits for a different idea: shrink a new habit until it takes two minutes to start. Goaltree’s playbook uses Allen’s version on your tasks. For new habits, see habit stacking.
When to use it
- Small tasks pile up and make the list look bigger than it is
- You need some momentum before a hard task
- You have a few spare minutes between meetings
How to do it
- 01 Scan the list Look for anything you could finish in under two minutes: a reply, a booking, a quick fix.
- 02 Do it now Don’t schedule it and don’t move it. Just do it.
- 03 Be honest If it turns into a 20-minute job, stop and give it a proper slot.
- 04 Sweep daily A quick pass each morning stops small things from piling up.

FAQ
Questions, answered
What is the 2-Minute Rule?
A rule from David Allen’s Getting Things Done: if something takes less than two minutes, do it right away instead of adding it to a list.
Is it the same as James Clear's 2-minute rule?
Not quite. Clear’s version is about starting a habit with a two-minute version of it. This playbook uses Allen’s version on tasks. For new habits, try habit stacking or Goaltree’s habit tracker.
Why let the coach pick the quick tasks?
Because a long list hides them. The coach reads every open task in the goal at once and pulls out the quick ones, which takes it seconds.
